This blog post is to show my work from unit 2.

1.1

Critically compare a range of research tools, methods and skills.

Hansel and Gretel Research Plan Task.

•Different research tools needed:

  • Internet.
  • Article
  • Book.
  • Camera.
  • Pen and Paper.

•Different Research methods needed:

  • Interviews.
  • Surveys.
  • Focus Groups.
  • Observation.
  • Speech / Talking to people.

•Different Research skills needed:

  • Relevant thoughts.
  • Analyzing Data to find relevant information.
  • Gathering correct information from the internet.
  • Gather correct information from books.
  • People skills/Communication skills.

•How can all of these be used to better my project?

•The internet I will use to do secondary research as its a very good for quick  searches for Different Forests at different times of the year for example we have 2 different ideas about 2 different forests, one as a snowy white forest and the other as an autumn forest where the rest of the leaves are in the process of falling off as here in England the chances of snow are very small, and we’ve passed autumn so i’d have to wait a whole year. As well as being able to look at examples of anything I might need to look up, E.G. Leaf Piles within the autumn asset. Perhaps Snow laying on the branches of trees too. The internet would also allow the user to be able to quickly look up and read all the online articles of things they would need to or want to know about. The book is also a great source as they can be found plentiful within cities, towns. Within the library as they can be found for any topic that you need them for. You can compare these two sources as they are the same thing, A network of information, the main difference is that books are the older set of tools and the internet is the new thing that can search for something specifically within seconds.

•A Camera would be really useful for primary research as it would enable me to gather photos and videos/ sound recordings from where ever and whenever I would be in those places and situations.

•My two primary sources will be that i’ll go to my local woods called Larkey valley woods. gather some photos of the trail, trees, bushes and everything else. I will also gather some sound recordings from my phone.

•My two secondary sources will be that i look at photos of snowy woods, and autumn woods to get an ideas of what they could look like and maybe they could inspire me to better my own designs

Research introduction power point.

This is the power point that tells us the basics and what classifies as a certain type of research.

From making the power point and learning whilst making it, I can say that i am more aware of the different types of research and what classifies as them.

Critically compare a range of primary and secondary research sources

Secondary research foliage.

2 x Pixel based foliage

This is my first piece of 2d Foliage taken from a game called “Super Mario 2d Land” From Nintendo released in 2012 available at: “http://1u88jj3r4db2x4txp44yqfj1.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/New-Super-Mario-Bros-U-Gameplay-gamersxtreme.jpg”for the WiiU (accessed 10/11/16).
This piece of foliage in particular is going in a more cartoony direction, however they haqve still tried to keep some detail on them. As for the more cartoony aspect they have tried to make it also suit the specific level they are in. E.G. there is an acorn power up and so they have drawn in acorns at the bottom of the tree.

They (Galaxy Trail Games) have gone for a game that looks heavily based on one of the early Sonic games. They have added some realistic shading to make it feel less like its predecessors (Sonic The Hedgehog) etc.

2 x 3D foliage

This is from The Witcher 3 and it is an open world game. As such it needs to have exceptional foliage to fully emerge the player. It does this very well with a wide range of vibrant colours and a very generous amount of background scenery, that is very pleasing to the eye to look at.

Fallout 4 is an open world game with a vast amount of foliage. Bethesda the developers have taken this is a different way. Instead of leaving everything all bare, dull and without anything to really bring in the audience, they have decided to bring in some colours the really contradict the “Post apocalyptic wasteland theme” as it could make the player think that some things are still scorched and ruined whilst others have begun to regrow and make the world beautiful again.

Comparing the similarities and differences

Differences in the games foliage; Apart from the obvious difference of the 2d-3d change they have a few differences they 2d platform games that i have chosen both have some cartoon type of effect to the foliage although the second 2d platform game does have hints of realism within it. The 3d Games and their foliage have actual animations so they actually move. Unlike the 2d pixel games they do have some kind of movement to the trees but it’s kinda comparable to bobbing. The 2d pixel games foliage don’t really reflect much of the sun/lights. The 3d games when its raining also reflect the liquid that has made it wet/shiny and so it’ll show more and when something is wet within the game, you’ll definitely be able to tell.

Similarities in the games; All the Games at some point add some kind of colours to it, to make it more vibrant and more pleasing to the eye. Out of all of these i’d have to say The Witcher 3, and Freedom Planet are most like real-life as in even though Freedom Planet is pixel based it has some realistic shading and not much in terms of cartoon effects. The Witcher 3 you could describe as vastly similar to Real-life, this is because it’s set in Between 2700 BR to 1240 BR comparable to before we did anything resembling construction. So there is foliage everywhere as we haven’t begun our reign of terror and landscaping.

I’ve added a photo of wet foliage below just to help illustrate my point in the differences about the foliage being wet within the games.

To compare and analyse the usefulness of primary and secondary research.

During the development of my 3D environment i had a few bumps n bangs, I didn’t manage to get any primary research as a was working on other things, Although I didn’t get any primary research I have gotten plenty of secondary research. My secondary research has proved plenty useful, giving me all the ideas I could need. Secondary research will do in a pinch if you are lacking primary research, If I could get my hands on some primary research it would almost certainly be better than secondary research as it’s something you’ve found and taken yourself  and now let someone else do the work.

If i had to say which type of research was better for this particular project I’d have to say secondary research, as no one can just pop over to the black forest within Germany so getting images on the internet is the next best thing.

Evaluate the effectiveness of design and research tools methods and skills to develop ideas for creative production.

Working with others was great as it allowed me to connect with their mind and see what ideas we could come up with together, as well as combining maybe a few things that they are good at with some of the things I’m good at. Overall this was an excellent task to get us thinking about what would be particularly needed when producing certain games etc.
